Sherwood lies in Washington County, Oregon, on the southwestern edge of the Portland metropolitan area. It grew from a small farming and railway town into a busy suburb, and its map still shows both stages: a compact historic grid known as Old Town, surrounded by larger modern neighbourhoods of curving streets and cul-de-sacs.
The northern edge of town borders the Tualatin River National Wildlife Refuge, whose wetlands and floodplain appear on the map as open, irregular ground with very few roads. Highway 99W runs along the eastern side, a strong diagonal that separates commercial strips from the quieter residential areas to the west.
