Shimotsuke lies in the south of Tochigi Prefecture, on the flat northern edge of the Kantō Plain. It was formed in 2006 from the merger of Minamikawachi, Ishibashi and Kokubunji, and its map still shows several separate centres linked by roads and rail, with rice fields, rivers and small woods between them.
The city takes its name from the old province of Shimotsuke, and its northern part contains the sites of the provincial temples, including the Shimotsuke Kokubunji ruins and the Yakushiji temple site. Jichi Medical University and its hospital are also here, forming one of the city's main districts.
A Shimotsuke map poster shows the patchwork of districts and fields, the rail line and roads running north toward Utsunomiya, and the open green spaces around the historical sites. In black and white, the pattern of settlements, fields and river lines makes a spacious, balanced composition.

Provincial temple sites
The grounds of the ancient provincial temples form open areas in the northern part of the city. They are quiet, park-like spaces within the surrounding fields and villages.
Kantō Plain fields
Rice paddies and farm plots cover much of the land between the districts. Their small rectangular shapes give the poster a regular background texture.
