Shīrvān lies in North Khorasan Province, in a broad valley between mountain ranges that run roughly northwest to southeast. The town spreads across the valley floor, and from above its streets form a fairly regular pattern set against open farmland, with the mountains marking the horizon on both sides.
The valley has long served as a corridor for travel across northeastern Iran, and Shīrvān sits on the road that links Bojnurd with Quchan and Mashhad further east. That route runs through the town as a main axis, with the rest of the street network organised around it. The surrounding fields and orchards give way to dry slopes as the land rises.
