Shiyeli lies in Kazakhstan's Kyzylorda Region, along the middle course of the Syr Darya. From above, the town looks orderly: long parallel streets divided into rectangular blocks, laid out beside the railway that follows the river valley through this part of the country. The line crosses the map as one unbroken stroke.
Around the town, the land splits into two very different textures. Near the river, irrigation channels and field boundaries make a fine mesh of lines, since this stretch of the Syr Darya has long been farmed, with rice among its crops. Farther out, the steppe is almost empty, and on the map it reads as wide, quiet space.
