Shuanglong is a town in Chongqing, the mountainous municipality on the upper Yangtze. From above it doesn't spread in any single direction. Its streets follow the contours of the land, collecting in the lower ground and thinning out wherever the slopes turn steep, so the built area looks gathered rather than laid out.
This is typical of the Chongqing countryside, where rolling hills are cut into small valleys and roads have to choose the easiest line between them. On the map that produces loops, switchbacks and short connectors, surrounded by the fine texture of fields, ponds and scattered hamlets. There are few straight lines, and they stand out wherever they appear.
