Sim is a small town in the Chelyabinsk region of Russia, on the western slopes of the Southern Urals. It takes its name from the Sim River, which winds through a valley surrounded by forested hills. Like many Ural towns, it began in the 18th century as an ironworks, and the map still reflects that origin: the settlement follows the river and a dammed pond that once powered the works.
The street pattern stretches along the valley rather than spreading evenly. Rows of houses, many of them wooden, line streets that run parallel to the water and then climb the side slopes. The pond is the widest open shape in the drawing, and the old industrial area sits beside the dam. Beyond the last streets, dense forest takes over.
