Sinjār lies in Nineveh Governorate in north-western Iraq, near the Syrian border. The town sits on the southern slopes of Mount Sinjar, a long, narrow ridge that rises abruptly from the surrounding plain and runs for roughly a hundred kilometres from east to west. The mountain is the dominant feature of any map of the area.
The streets of the town climb from the plain toward the base of the ridge, with the terrain influencing their pattern. The region is the historic heartland of the Yazidi community, and in 2014 it was the site of mass atrocities by the Islamic State group, which forced much of its population to flee to the mountain.
