Sittingbourne is in north Kent, and its map is easiest to read as a line and a creek. The line is the old Roman road of Watling Street, now the A2, which forms the high street. The creek is Milton Creek, a narrow tidal inlet that winds north from the town to the Swale and the flat marshland beyond.
Medieval pilgrims on their way to Canterbury used to stop here. Later, the creek made the town an industrial centre for brickmaking and paper mills, and barges carried goods out to the Thames estuary. Part of the old industrial railway survives as the Sittingbourne and Kemsley Light Railway. On the map, the streets are dense around the high street and the railway, while the land toward the marshes becomes more open.

To the south, housing estates spread up toward the chalk country of the North Downs. To the north, the edges fade into water, reed beds and the wide pale surface of the Swale.

A narrow tidal creek winds north from the town to the Swale. It was once lined with brickfields and paper mills, and it is the most organic line on the poster.

At the top of the map, the land opens into low marsh and channels facing the Isle of Sheppey. The streets thin out and water takes over.
