Skive lies at the southern tip of Skive Fjord, one of the inlets of the Limfjord that cuts across northern Jutland. From above the town wraps around the head of the fjord, with the water narrowing into a harbour and the Karup River flowing in from the south through the middle of town. The older centre sits near the river, and newer districts spread out on the surrounding slopes.
To the north stretches the Salling peninsula, farmed land bordered by fjord on several sides. The map shows how Skive functions as its gateway: roads fan out from the town across the countryside, and the shoreline bends away in long, gentle curves. Beech woods and lakes appear as darker patches on the edges of the built-up area.
