Söke sits where the hills of Aydın province give way to the broad plain of the Büyük Menderes river, the ancient Maeander, which gave its name to meandering rivers everywhere. From above the town's dense blocks rest against the slope, and to the south and west the land opens into a flat, cultivated plain crossed by irrigation channels.
This plain wasn't always land. Over thousands of years the river's silt filled in what was once a bay of the Aegean. The ancient ports of Priene and Miletus, both near Söke, were left stranded far from the water. Today the plain is known for cotton and other crops, arranged in long, straight field strips.
A Söke map poster captures the meeting of hills and delta. The older streets climb and wind, while the roads on the plain run straight and far. Farther west the Dilek Peninsula and its national park frame the view toward the sea.
