SoHo Map Poster & Print
SoHo takes its name from its position South of Houston Street. On a map it is a neat, compact area: Houston Street along the north, Canal Street to the south, with Broadway along one side and the streets toward Sixth Avenue on the other. Inside, long narrow blocks run north to south, cut by a steady rhythm of short cross streets.
The district holds one of the largest collections of cast-iron buildings in the world, most built in the second half of the nineteenth century for warehouses and manufacturing. Some streets, such as Greene Street, still have Belgian block paving. From the 1960s artists converted the lofts into studios, and the area became known for galleries before shops took over many ground floors.
A SoHo map poster is orderly and architectural. With no park or waterfront inside its bounds, the print is a study in long, regular blocks, and the gentle angles where its streets meet Canal Street and the Village give the grid just enough variation.

Streets such as Greene, Mercer and Wooster run parallel through the district, forming long narrow blocks that suited the cast-iron loft buildings.
Canal Street
The southern boundary runs at a slight angle to the blocks above it, a wide street that separates SoHo from Tribeca and Chinatown.
