Sopron sits in the far northwest of Hungary, almost surrounded by Austrian territory. Its historic centre has one of the most recognisable outlines of any Central European town: a horseshoe shape that follows the line of the Roman and medieval walls of Scarbantia. A ring of streets now runs where the walls once stood, and the old core inside is dense and intimate.
After the First World War, the town voted in a 1921 plebiscite to remain in Hungary, earning it the title Civitas Fidelissima, the most loyal town. The Fire Tower rises over the main square. In 1989, the Pan-European Picnic held near Sopron became an early crack in the Iron Curtain.
