South Croydon lies just south of central Croydon in the London Borough of Croydon. On the map the Brighton Road is the backbone. It runs roughly north to south, following the valley floor, with the railway close beside it. Residential streets climb the slopes on both sides, and they curve more as the ground rises.
The housing is mostly Victorian and Edwardian terraces and semi-detached houses, with larger interwar homes further up the hillsides. From above, the streets form long, gently bending rows with regular back gardens between them. Parks and school grounds create open spaces within the pattern, and the green belt of the North Downs is not far to the south.
