Spalding sits in the south of Lincolnshire, in the heart of the Fens, where the land is flat and much of it was reclaimed from marsh. The River Welland runs through the town, and the older streets follow its banks. Beyond the edges of town the map changes character completely: long straight drains, dykes and field boundaries divide the ground into a patchwork of hard-edged shapes.
The town has long been tied to horticulture. For decades Spalding was known for its bulb fields and its spring flower parade, and growing and packing still shape the local economy.
