Stadtlohn lies in the west of the Münsterland, in North Rhine-Westphalia, only a few kilometres from the border with the Netherlands. The Berkel River flows through the town on its way west into Dutch territory. On a map its winding course divides the centre, and bridges link the old core to the neighbourhoods beyond.
In 1623, during the Thirty Years' War, a major battle was fought near the town, in which Catholic League forces under Tilly defeated a Protestant army led by Christian of Brunswick. The Münsterland countryside around Stadtlohn is typical of the region, with scattered farmsteads, small woods and a dense network of country lanes, many of them following old field boundaries.
