Steinhagen lies in the Gütersloh district of North Rhine-Westphalia, just west of Bielefeld, where the flat Westphalian lowland meets the southern edge of the Teutoburg Forest. The map shows a modest central area with a church and main street, surrounded by residential neighbourhoods laid out in curving roads and cul-de-sacs, and then farmland and scattered farmsteads beyond.
The municipality includes outlying places such as Amshausen, closer to the forest ridge, and Brockhagen to the south-west, each with its own small cluster of streets. A motorway crosses the area, and the railway line toward Bielefeld gives the town a clear diagonal. To the north, the wooded hills bring the built area to a natural edge.
Steinhagen is known across Germany for Steinhäger, the juniper spirit that takes its name from the town and has been distilled here for a long time.
