Stoke is a suburb of Nelson, at the top of New Zealand's South Island, sitting between the city centre and Richmond. From above it forms a long band of housing on a narrow coastal plain. Tasman Bay lies on one side and steep, bush-covered hills rise on the other. The main arterial road runs along the length of the suburb, parallel to the shore.
That arrangement gives the map a clear direction. Near the water the streets are flat and fairly regular. Further inland they start to curve and dead-end as they follow the spurs and gullies of the hills. Green spaces are scattered through the suburb, including the old estate grounds of Isel Park, known for its mature trees.
A Stoke map poster captures how tightly this part of Nelson is squeezed between sea and slope. The coastline gives the lower edge of the frame a soft, irregular line. The upper edge fades into contoured hill country with few roads, so the shape of the land does most of the work in the design.

This historic estate is now a public park with large specimen trees. On the map it is one of the larger open spaces in the suburb, a green pause among residential blocks.
