Stuttgart's centre sits in a bowl-shaped valley, known locally as the Kessel, with steep, wooded and vine-covered slopes on almost every side. On a map, the dense street grid of the centre gives way quickly to curving roads climbing the hills, and hundreds of public stairways, the Stäffele, connect the lower streets with the neighbourhoods above.
The Neckar runs along the eastern side of the city, past Bad Cannstatt, rather than through the centre. The Schlossplatz and the long Königstraße form the heart of the basin, with the palace grounds leading toward the Schlossgarten park, which stretches down toward the river.
Stuttgart is the capital of Baden-Württemberg and home to Mercedes-Benz and Porsche, both with museums in the city. Its television tower, opened in 1956, was the first built from reinforced concrete and became a model for towers around the world.
