Sulechów lies in the Lubusz region of western Poland, a few kilometres from the Oder and not far from Zielona Góra. From above, the town shows a clear historic core: a compact centre around the market square, partly enclosed by surviving medieval walls, with later streets and housing estates spreading outward.
The town, known in German as Züllichau before 1945, has kept several notable historic features. The Kraków Gate, part of the old fortifications, still marks one entrance to the centre, and the town's castle sits near the edge of the old core. Parks and green strips fill some of the former defensive areas.
