Sumy lies in northeastern Ukraine, where the Psel River and its small tributary, the Sumka, meet. The oldest part of the city occupies higher ground above the rivers, and from there the streets spread out in several directions. On the map, the winding course of the Psel and the green floodplain along it form a soft boundary on one side of the city.
The city was founded in the mid-seventeenth century by Cossack settlers as a fortified town, and later became a regional centre. Its skyline includes churches such as the Transfiguration Cathedral in the centre. The historic streets are more regular than in many older towns, with main roads leading out from the core toward the surrounding countryside and other cities.
