Sysert’ lies south of Yekaterinburg in the forested hills of the Middle Urals. Like many Urals towns, it began in the eighteenth century as an ironworks, and its plan is organised around the pond created by damming the Sysert river to power the works.
From above, the pond is the dominant shape, with streets following its shoreline and the old factory area near the dam. The town is also known as the birthplace of Pavel Bazhov, the writer whose Urals tales drew on local mining and craft traditions.
