Tanabe sits on the western coast of the Kii Peninsula in Wakayama Prefecture, where a river valley opens onto Tanabe Bay. The central district is a compact grid of streets on the low ground near the harbour, with forested hills rising quickly behind it. On a map the coastline, with its inlets and small headlands, is as prominent as the town itself.
The city is a traditional gateway to the Kumano Kodo, the ancient pilgrimage routes to the Kumano shrines. The Nakahechi route sets out into the mountains from the Tanabe area. Tanabe is also the birthplace of Morihei Ueshiba, founder of aikido, and was home to the naturalist Minakata Kumagusu. The surrounding hills are known for their plum orchards.
