Taupō sits on the north-eastern shore of Lake Taupō, New Zealand's largest lake. The lake fills a caldera formed by a series of huge volcanic eruptions. On a map, the town is small next to the water. Its streets curve along the shoreline and climb gently into suburbs, with the open lake stretching south beyond the edge of the frame.
The Waikato River, New Zealand's longest, leaves the lake at Taupō and flows north through the town. A short way downstream it narrows through the rocky channel at Huka Falls. The river crossing and the lakefront are the key parts of the town plan. Holiday streets, parks and the airport spread across the rising ground behind them.

The Waikato leaves the lake right at the town and flows north. It is one of the few places where a major river begins inside a town map.
