Tena is the capital of Napo Province in Ecuador, set where the eastern slopes of the Andes flatten into the Amazon basin. The town grew around the confluence of the Tena and Pano rivers, and the map shows it clearly: a compact grid of streets squeezed between the two channels, with bridges carrying the town across the water.
Tena is widely known as a base for whitewater rafting and kayaking on the rivers of the upper Napo basin, and as a gateway to Kichwa communities and rainforest lodges further east. A small wooded island at the confluence is kept as a park, and it appears as a green gap in the middle of the town.
