Tendō Map Poster & Print
Tendō lies in the Yamagata basin in northern Japan, just north of Yamagata city. On the map, the town forms a compact grid of streets in the middle of flat, fertile land, with mountains rising to the east and the Mogami River flowing to the west. Railway and main roads run north to south through the basin, linking Tendō to the rest of the prefecture.
Tendō is best known for its shogi pieces. The town produces the large majority of the wooden pieces used in Japan, and giant shogi games are played there with people standing in for the pieces. It also has a hot spring area, Tendō Onsen, and the surrounding land is known for cherries and La France pears.

Rice paddies and fruit orchards surround the town in small plots. They give the edges of the map a fine, woven texture.
Rail through the basin
The railway and main roads run north–south through the town. They make long, straight lines that connect it with the rest of the basin.
