Ténès lies on Algeria's Mediterranean coast, west of Algiers, where mountains come close to the sea. From above, the town sits at a small bay beside a cape, with the harbour and breakwaters marking the shoreline and streets rising from the waterfront onto the slopes behind.
The site has a long past: it was the Phoenician and Roman settlement of Cartennae, and an older town, known as Old Ténès, lies a short distance inland from the modern centre. Fishing and the port remain part of daily life, and the coastline around it is rocky, with small beaches between headlands.
