The river winds across the valley floor beside the town. It is one of the few rivers in Vietnam that flows north into China, and it draws a soft curve across the map.

Thất Khê is the district town of Tràng Định in Lạng Sơn province, in the far northeast of Vietnam, not far from the border with China. From above, the town lies on a flat valley floor beside the Kỳ Cùng River. Streets gather around the main road, and rice fields spread across the lowland. Steep limestone hills and forested slopes close the view on every side.
The town sits on the historic Route 4, the road that runs along the border between Lạng Sơn and Cao Bằng. In 1950 this road was the scene of the Border Campaign, one of the decisive battles of the First Indochina War, and Thất Khê was one of the posts along it. Today the town is a local market centre for the surrounding Tày and Nùng communities.

The historic border road runs through the town, giving the centre its long, narrow form. It connects Thất Khê with Lạng Sơn city and the Cao Bằng highlands.

Around the town, rice fields fill the flat valley floor while steep karst hills rise abruptly at the edges. Roads follow the gaps between them.
