Thodupuzha lies in Idukki district, where the coastal lowlands of Kerala start to climb towards the Western Ghats. The Thodupuzha River runs through the town, and much of the street pattern follows its curves. That gives the centre a shape formed by water rather than by a planned grid.
Around the river, roads spread along valley floors and over low hills, often lined with houses set in their own gardens. Farther out, plantations and dense vegetation break up the network, and the town dissolves gradually into the countryside. Thodupuzha is often seen as a gateway to the hill districts of Idukki, and the roads leaving town head towards higher ground.
