Thul lies in upper Sindh, on the broad alluvial plain the Indus has built up over thousands of years. On a map the ground is almost perfectly level. The town's streets pack tightly around a central market area, then loosen into lanes running out toward farmland. With no hills to bend the roads, the pattern is shaped by water and by the routes to neighbouring towns.
Irrigation defines this part of Pakistan. Canals and smaller channels fed by the Indus barrage system cross the countryside in long, deliberate lines, and field boundaries follow them.
