Tịnh Biên is in An Giang province, in the far west of the Mekong Delta, along the border with Cambodia. On a map it is an unusual mix: the flat, canal-lined plains of the delta and a group of steep, isolated hills known locally as the Seven Mountains. The Vĩnh Tế Canal runs straight along the border to the northwest.
Núi Cấm, the highest of the Seven Mountains, is a well-known pilgrimage site with pagodas and viewpoints. The Trà Sư cajuput forest, a flooded wetland reserve, is also nearby and attracts visitors during the flood season. Tịnh Biên is a crossing and market town on the border.
