Tiruchengode is built around a hill. A rocky rise stands above the town, and the Arthanareeswarar temple at its top is dedicated to the joint form of Shiva and Parvati. A long stairway and a ghat road climb to the temple, and pilgrims have made that ascent for centuries.
The streets pack tightly around the base of the hill and then loosen as they move out into the flat Kongu country. Main roads leave the centre toward the neighbouring towns of the Namakkal district. Between them, newer neighbourhoods and workshop areas fill in, and the grid grows looser toward the farmland.

Two routes lead to the summit, one a long flight of steps and one a winding road. The road's bends show up as a looping line across the hill.
