Tokat lies in north-central Turkey, in the valley of the Yeşilırmak river, and from above the town stretches along the valley floor between hills. A castle sits on a rocky outcrop above the historic centre, and the older streets gather at its foot, while newer districts extend along the river and the roads through the valley.
The town has a long history under many rulers and preserves notable buildings from the Seljuk and Ottoman periods, including the Gök Medrese and the Taşhan caravanserai. It is also known for its local cuisine and for the traditional craft of block-printed textiles.
