Tonggu lies in the mountainous southeast of Chongqing, a region of sharp ridges and deep valleys near the borders with Guizhou and Hunan. In this kind of country, towns take whatever flat ground the valleys offer. The streets stretch along the valley rather than spreading outward, and the surrounding slopes limit how far the built-up area can reach.
From above, the settlement reads as a narrow strip of streets and buildings with a watercourse close by. Roads climb out of the valley in switchbacks. Terraces and small fields step up the hillsides where the gradient allows. The terrain shapes almost every line on the map.
A Tonggu map poster captures that close relationship between town and landscape. The compact core sits at the centre, and the winding approach roads and the pattern of the valley surround it. It is a quiet, linear composition, typical of the upland towns of this part of China and quite unlike the grids of the plains.

Routes leaving town zigzag up the surrounding hills. They form tight hairpin curves that are some of the most graphic lines on the print.
