Tornio stands at the northern end of the Gulf of Bothnia, where the Tornio River meets the sea and forms the border between Finland and Sweden. The old town centre is on the island of Suensaari, joined to the mainland by bridges, and Haparanda lies directly opposite. The two towns have grown so close that they share a common centre across the national boundary.
The river mouth breaks into channels, islands and shallow bays, so the map is full of water shapes. South of the centre, the Röyttä area holds one of the world's largest stainless steel works, run by Outokumpu. Tornio's wooden church dates from the late seventeenth century. A golf course on the border lets players cross between two countries, and two time zones, during a single round.

Streets on the Finnish and Swedish sides nearly run into each other, with only the river between them, and the coastline of the Bothnian Bay frames the lower part of the print. The Tornio River spreads into channels, islets and bays before it reaches the Gulf of Bothnia. This gives the edges of the map an intricate coastal texture.
