Torquay sits on the northern side of Tor Bay in south Devon, the largest of the towns on what is often called the English Riviera. On the map, the coastline dominates: a broad, sweeping curve of bay, a sheltered harbour and marina at the centre, and rocky headlands and coves further along. Behind the water, the town climbs steeply up several hills.
Because of that terrain, the streets rarely run straight. Roads zigzag up slopes, curve around hillsides and follow terraces, giving the map a winding, layered look. Torquay is known as the birthplace of Agatha Christie, and Kents Cavern, one of Britain's most important prehistoric cave sites, lies on its eastern side.
