Tosayamada lies east of Kochi city on Shikoku, and since 2006 it has been part of the city of Kami. The Nakano area sits on the flat ground near the Monobe River, one of the main rivers of Kochi Prefecture. From above you see a compact grid of houses and small streets, with the river's wide, braided bed alongside and rice paddies filling the gaps.
The JR Dosan Line passes through Tosa-Yamada Station, drawing a clean curve across the town before heading north into the mountains of central Shikoku. Nearby is Ryūgadō, a limestone cave designated as a natural monument and one of the best-known sights in the area. Beyond the plain the hills rise quickly, and the map shifts from paddies to forest almost at once.
