Triunfo sits at around a thousand metres above sea level in the Sertão of Pernambuco, which makes it one of the highest towns in north-eastern Brazil. That altitude shapes everything on the map. Instead of a flat grid, the streets bend to follow the slopes, climbing and turning around the hills, and the town gathers around a small lake that forms a calm, open shape at its centre.
The cooler climate sets Triunfo apart from the surrounding semi-arid lowlands, and it has long drawn visitors from across the state. Nearby rises Pico do Papagaio, regarded as the highest point in Pernambuco. The historic centre keeps colourful buildings and an early twentieth-century theatre, the Cine Theatro Guarany, while roads wind down from the town towards the plains below.
