Ueno-ebisumachi is part of the old centre of Iga in Mie Prefecture, the former castle town of Iga-Ueno. The area is best known in Japan for two things: the ninja traditions of the Iga region and the poet Matsuo Bashō, who was born here. The town sits inside a basin, with hills on every side, so the built-up area stays compact.
On the map the old town appears as a tight grid of narrow streets laid out below the castle hill. Iga Ueno Castle stands on a rise to the north of the centre, and its high stone walls are among the tallest in Japan. Beyond the grid, rice fields and river flats spread out across the floor of the basin.
