Ulhasnagar was founded after the partition of 1947 to house Sindhi refugees, on the site of a former military transit camp in what is now Thane district. The city still carries that origin in its structure: it is divided into numbered camps, and from above the streets form tight, regular blocks packed with small buildings and workshops.
The Central Railway suburban line runs along the city, with stations connecting it to Kalyan on one side and Ambernath on the other, and onward to Mumbai. The Ulhas River, which gives the city its name, flows to the north and west, and its bends and creeks mark the edges of the urban area on the map.
A Ulhasnagar map poster shows one of the densest urban grids in the Mumbai region, with almost no open ground between the blocks. The city became known for its many small traders and manufacturers, and those narrow streets still carry most of that activity.
