Uman sits on rolling land in the Cherkasy region, where small rivers have cut shallow valleys into the plateau. The historic centre follows the higher ground, with streets fanning out from the old market area, and newer housing fills the slopes around it. The most striking element on the map is the large green outline of Sofiyivka Park on the northern side of town, its paths winding between ponds and groves.
Sofiyivka was created in the 1790s by the Polish magnate Stanisław Szczęsny Potocki for his wife Zofia. It remains one of the best-known landscape parks in Eastern Europe, with grottoes, waterfalls and artificial lakes. Uman is also a place of pilgrimage: Rabbi Nachman of Breslov is buried here, and many thousands of Hasidic pilgrims arrive each year for Rosh Hashanah.

River valleys
Small rivers cross the city in shallow valleys. Ponds and green strips interrupt the street pattern there and give the map its gentle curves.
Radial roads
Roads leave the centre in several directions across the flat farmland. Seen from above, this gives Uman a loose star shape.
