Unimak Island is the largest of the Aleutian Islands and the first in the chain, separated from the tip of the Alaska Peninsula only by the narrow Isanotski Strait. Its outline is broad and irregular, and nearly the whole island is volcanic terrain: lava fields, ash plains and a line of large volcanoes running along its length. It is one of the most volcanically active places in North America.
Shishaldin Volcano rises near the centre of the island, a steep, symmetrical cone and the highest peak in the Aleutians. To its east and west lie other major volcanoes, including the Isanotski Peaks, Westdahl and the broad Fisher Caldera. On a map these features dominate the interior, which has no roads and no settlement beyond the island's eastern tip.
False Pass, on Isanotski Strait, is the island's only community, a small fishing village facing the mainland. At Scotch Cap on the southwest coast, the lighthouse was destroyed by the tsunami of 1946, which killed its crew.
