Upper Hutt lies at the northern end of the Hutt Valley, north of Wellington. The Hutt River runs down the valley floor, and the city spreads along it between steep, forested hills. On a map, the urban area forms a long, narrow band that follows the river and State Highway 2, with suburbs extending into side valleys and open country beyond.
Trentham Racecourse and the army camp sit in the south of the city, while to the north the valley narrows towards Kaitoke Regional Park, where scenes for the Rivendell sequences of The Lord of the Rings were filmed. To the east, the Remutaka Range separates the valley from the Wairarapa, crossed by the old Remutaka Incline railway route, now a rail trail.
