Urk Map Poster
Urk, in the Dutch province of Flevoland, was an island in the Zuiderzee for centuries. That changed when the Noordoostpolder was drained in the 1930s and 1940s, connecting it to the mainland. On the map, you can still see the outline of the old island, a small rise on the polder edge facing the IJsselmeer.
The old village is a dense cluster of narrow streets and small houses around the harbour and the higher ground. Newer neighbourhoods spread out onto the flat polder in a more regular pattern. The harbour basins, dikes and the lighthouse on the waterfront define the western and southern edges.
Urk has kept a strong fishing tradition and a distinct local identity, and its fleet remains one of the best known in the Netherlands. An Urk map poster shows the history of the place in its shape: an old island village, a working harbour and the straight lines of reclaimed land behind it.
