Usagara sits in the Mwanza Region of northern Tanzania, a short distance inland from the southern shores of Lake Victoria. From above it reads as a modest settlement rather than a dense city: a main road carries most of the structure, and shorter lanes branch off it toward homes, plots and open ground. The map is a study in how a small town takes shape along a route.
Home to roughly fifteen thousand people, the town shows the loose, open pattern common to this part of East Africa. Built-up blocks thin quickly into fields and footpaths, and the lines on the page grow sparse toward the edges. The wider Mwanza Region is known for its granite outcrops, the rounded boulder hills that rise from farmland around the lake, and for Lake Victoria itself, the largest lake in Africa.
