Usedom lies at the mouth of the Oder in the southern Baltic, and the border between Germany and Poland divides it. The larger western part is German, and the eastern tip belongs to the Polish port city of Świnoujście. Water surrounds the island on every side: the open sea to the north, the Szczecin Lagoon to the south, and narrow channels to the east and west.
Its two coasts could hardly be more different. The Baltic side is a long, gently curving sandy beach lined by the resorts of Ahlbeck, Heringsdorf and Bansin, known as the imperial spas, with their white villas and piers. A promenade runs along this coast and across the border. The southern shore breaks up into peninsulas, reed-lined inlets and small lakes.
At the northwest tip, Peenemünde was the site of Germany's wartime rocket research centre, where the V-2 was developed, and it now holds a historical museum. On the Polish side, Świnoujście spreads across Usedom and the neighbouring island of Wolin. To the south, the island breaks up into peninsulas, bays and inland lakes along the lagoon. On the poster it is the most intricate stretch of outline, a lace-like edge.

The Polish city at the island's eastern end, divided by the Świna strait. Its port, ferry crossings and street grid give the eastern edge of the map a dense, urban finish.
