Velikiy Ustyug is one of the oldest towns of the Russian North, first recorded in the early thirteenth century. It stands where the Sukhona and Yug rivers join to form the Northern Dvina. For centuries it was a trading post on the river route to Arkhangelsk and Siberia, and that wealth still shows in the many churches along the waterfront.
The river organises the map. The historic centre stretches in a long band along the Sukhona, with streets running parallel to the water and shorter lanes leading inland. Newer districts spread behind the old town in looser blocks, while the river, wide and slow, takes up a generous part of the frame.
Since the late 1990s the town has been promoted as the home of Ded Moroz, the Russian Father Frost, and his estate in the forest outside town draws winter visitors from across the country.
