Velletri sits on a spur at the southern edge of the Alban Hills, south-east of Rome. The historic centre follows the ridge in a compact, elongated shape, with streets running along the crest and steep lanes dropping away on both sides. Below and around it the map opens onto slopes of vineyards and olive groves that fall toward the flat Pontine plain.
Velletri is one of the Castelli Romani towns and is known for its wine. In antiquity it was linked to the family of the emperor Augustus, whose paternal ancestors came from here. The medieval Torre del Trivio still rises above the old centre.
