Ventura, formally San Buenaventura, stretches along the Pacific coast of Southern California between the Ventura River and the Santa Clara River. Its map is built along the shoreline. A historic downtown sits near the western end, followed by a beachfront promenade and pier, and residential grids spread east across the coastal plain toward the harbour and farmland.
The city grew around Mission San Buenaventura, founded in 1782, and the mission still stands at the heart of the old downtown grid. Behind it the hills rise steeply, and streets wind upward before stopping at open slopes. Ventura Harbor, further down the coast, houses the headquarters of Channel Islands National Park, and its man-made basins give the shoreline a distinctive shape.

The long wooden pier extends straight into the Pacific from the beachfront. It is a thin, precise line that stands out against the open water on the poster.

To the south, a harbour of dredged channels and marinas breaks the natural coastline with geometric basins. It gives this part of the map a distinctly engineered look.
