Vertou is a commune immediately southeast of Nantes, in the Loire-Atlantique department of the Pays de la Loire. The Sèvre Nantaise, a tributary of the Loire, winds through it, and on the map the river is its most distinctive feature, bending slowly through meadows and wooded banks before joining the Loire at Nantes.
Vertou has grown into a residential suburb, with a historic centre near the river and newer neighbourhoods spreading outward. To the south and east the country opens into the vineyards of the Muscadet area, so the street pattern gradually thins into lanes, hamlets and fields.
