Vierzon grew where the Yèvre and the Arnon join the Cher, at the northwestern edge of Berry. On a map, the water is the first thing you notice: the broad Cher curving along the south, the Yèvre coming in from the east, and the straight line of the Canal de Berry running alongside. The old town sits on higher ground above the rivers, its narrow streets packed closely together.
In the nineteenth century the town became an industrial centre, known for porcelain, glass and agricultural machinery, and above all for its railway junction, where the line from Paris divides toward Tours, Bourges and Limoges. Tracks, sidings and the yards around the station still take up a generous share of the plan, drawn as long parallel strokes that contrast with the older, curving streets.
